The purpose of this qualification is to provide the equine industry with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to manage the care and exercise of horses in training for the sporthorse sector of the equine industry. 

Graduates will be capable of working under minimum supervision with responsibility for work outcomes and will be able to contribute effectively and professionally in the workplace.

ES401 Events Level 4 (14 Credits)

Students will communicate effectively with team members, clients, and performance venue personal and manage the preparation and requirements of horses before, during, and after an event, and attend to the riders requirements. 

ES402 Horse Care Level 4 (20 Credits)

Students will manage the day to day care requirements of horses in training. 

ES403 Health, Performance, and First Aid Level 4 (15 Credits)

Students will manage problems of performance horses and emergencies involving horses. 

ES404 Training Level 4 (21 Credits) 

Students will implement, monitor and review horses’ training plans for a specific equestrian discipline.

School Leavers

To be admitted to this programme all applicants must be at least 16 years of age on the date the programme starts, and meet the following requirements.

  • A recognized, relevant NQF Level 3 qualification or
  • NCEA level 2, and expressed interest in working in the Sporthorses sector,
  • physical ability to work safely around horses and machinery,
  • have a willingness to meet the attendance and academic requirements of the programme,
  • commitment to complete the practical component at an equine workplace,
  • be experienced riders that can rise to the trot and can canter.

All applicants need to provide evidence of riding ability through video submission

Language Requirements

All applicants (international and domestic) for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language need to provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the programme.

International applicants must provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the Programme as outlined in the table for internationally recognised English proficiency outcomes for international learners from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules and on Delivery Site English Language Requirements for International Ākonga webpage.

All applicants must provide evidence that they have the necessary language literacy proficiency required for the Programme as demonstrated by the equivalence of:

  • 10 NCEA literacy credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:
  • 5 credits in reading
  • 5 credits in writing

Applicants who are unable to provide evidence of the above may be required to demonstrate capability using an approved proficiency test or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

International applicants must provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the Programme as outlined in the table for internationally recognised English proficiency outcomes for international students from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules and on Delivery Site English Language Requirements for International Ākonga webpage.

Student's First Day Requirements:

Please bring your Driver's Licence. Stationery requirements: Clipboard, calculator, ruler, scissors, lever arch folders – x 2, A4 Refill Pads – at least 2, Dividers – at least 2 sets. 

Pens/pencils/highlighters Please note: Many students find it easier to work on a laptop, but this is not essential. General Clothing Requirements Named = Waterproof coat and leggings.

Suitable working trousers, Work shirts, Work jerseys, 6 pairs working socks, Gumboots, Steel capped boots, Woolly hat and gloves, Sun hat, 2 pairs overalls (blue/cotton).

To satisfactorily complete the NZ Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Groom) (Level 4) and be awarded the qualification the student must successfully achieve:

A minimum of 70 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Groom) (Level 4).

The student will normally be expected to complete the NZ Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Groom) (Level 4) full-time over half a year or part time over a year.
